Against Mainz in August 2009, the 20-year-old collected the ball inside his own half and went on a 54-metre solo run before finishing with his left foot. Reus Announced Himself With a 54-Metre Solo Goal

Reus arrived at Mönchengladbach in summer 2009 after breaking through with Rot Weiss Ahlen in the second tier. Gladbach gave him the number 11 and the club was still using the previous season’s Lotto home design, now updated from Kyocera to the new Postbank sponsor.

On 28 August, at home against Mainz, Reus produced the moment that properly introduced him to the Bundesliga. Starting inside his own half, he carried the ball 54 metres, escaped the Mainz defence and calmly finished left-footed for Gladbach’s second goal in a 2-0 victory. It was his first Bundesliga goal.

He went on to make 33 Bundesliga appearances and score eight goals in that debut season. What began in this shirt became the breakthrough that eventually turned Reus into Germany’s Footballer of the Year and took him back to boyhood club Borussia Dortmund.
