THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Last Saint-Étienne Shirt of Michel Platini

This shirt comes from the final chapter of Michel Platini’s time at Saint-Étienne.

During 1981–82, Platini scored 22 league goals and 27 in all competitions. Saint-Étienne reached the final day still fighting for the title and finished the season by destroying Metz 9–2, but Monaco won as well, leaving Les Verts one point short of another championship.

There was still one trophy left to chase. Saint-Étienne faced Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final, with Platini scoring twice as the match finished 2–2. PSG eventually won the penalty shootout, making it Platini’s final appearance for the club before he moved to Juventus.

That move changed everything. Platini went on to become one of the greatest players of his generation, but this green Le Coq Sportif design belongs to the moment just before the global fame, when he was still Saint-Étienne’s number ten, scoring goals and coming painfully close to leaving France with a final trophy.

The enormous KB Jardin sponsor, horizontal stripes and long sleeves make it unmistakably early 1980s. Add the Platini connection and it becomes the shirt from the final season of an era Saint-Étienne have never quite recreated.
