Riyad Mahrez scored the final goal of a 3-1 win, taking the reigning African champions to 21 consecutive matches without defeat. The shirt also hid a brilliant Algeria-specific detail inside the collar: a fennec fox decorated in the colours of the national flag.

Mahrez Scored on This Shirt’s Debut: Algeria’s 21st Game Unbeaten

There was barely any wait between reveal and debut. Adidas presented Algeria’s new home shirt on 12 November 2020 and the African champions wore the design against Zimbabwe that very evening. It was also the first national-team shirt based on Adidas’ Condivo 21 template, with green side panels, a subtle water-inspired pattern and Primeblue material made partly from Parley Ocean Plastic.

The debut went about as well as possible. Baghdad Bounedjah and Sofiane Feghouli put Algeria in control before captain Riyad Mahrez made it 3-0, eventually sealing a 3-1 victory. The result stretched Algeria’s unbeaten sequence to 21 matches: 16 wins and five draws since their last defeat in October 2018.

The best design detail is almost invisible when the shirt is being worn. Inside the neckline Adidas placed a fennec fox (the animal behind Algeria’s “Les Fennecs” nickname) in Algerian flag colours, while the outer shirt stayed almost completely white and green.
