Valencia 2017/18 Away Shirt (Small)

The red and yellow stripes on this shirt are not just there because Valencia is in the Valencian Community.

Adidas created the 2017/18 away kit as a direct tribute to the shirt worn in the 1979 Copa del Rey final, one of the most celebrated matches in Valencia CF history.

That final was played against newly crowned La Liga champions Real Madrid at the Vicente Calderón. Around 25,000 Valencia supporters travelled to Madrid, many carrying Valencian flags, while the team itself walked onto the pitch wearing the Senyera colours.

Then Mario Kempes took over. The Argentine scored both goals as Valencia won 2–0, securing the club’s fifth Copa del Rey. The game became so closely linked with the kit that Valencia still refers to it as the “Senyera final”.

Nearly four decades later, Adidas recreated that identity with red-and-yellow vertical stripes, blue collar and sleeve details and the new BLU Bold Like Us sponsor across the front.

The comeback of the shirt also coincided with a comeback on the pitch. Under Marcelino, Valencia’s 2017/18 side qualified for the Champions League again after several difficult seasons.

So this is essentially a modern version of a shirt permanently tied to Kempes, Real Madrid and one of Valencia’s greatest cup wins.
