THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt That Nearly Beat United at Old Trafford

One of the best moments in this shirt came against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Darren Bent scored after seven minutes, before Kenwyne Jones restored Sunderland’s lead in the second half.

Sunderland were heading for their first Old Trafford victory since 1968, but an Anton Ferdinand own goal deep into stoppage time made it 2-2.

It was also a huge season for Bent. In his first year at Sunderland, he scored 24 Premier League goals in 38 games, one of the best individual scoring seasons in the club’s modern era.
