Higuaín Broke a 66-Year-Old Serie A Record With a Final-Day Hat-Trick

On 14 May 2016, Gonzalo Higuaín walked onto the pitch against Frosinone with 33 Serie A goals to his name. He needed a hat-trick to break Gunnar Nordahl's long-standing record of 35, set for AC Milan in 1949/50. Remarkably, that was exactly what happened. Higuaín scored three times in Napoli's 4-0 victory, finishing the season with 36 league goals in 35 appearances.

His record-breaking campaign came under Maurizio Sarri, who had arrived as Napoli manager that summer. The team finished second in Serie A, with Lorenzo Insigne contributing 12 league goals and eight assists alongside Higuaín's extraordinary scoring record. Napoli had found an attacking style that made them one of Italy's most entertaining sides.

The 2015/16 season also marked the beginning of Napoli's partnership with Kappa, replacing longtime manufacturer Macron. Their new away shirt swapped the traditional sky blue for anthracite grey, keeping blue accents around the collar and sleeves. It was a distinctive change for a season that Napoli supporters still remember for Higuaín's 36 goals, the title challenge and his controversial departure to Juventus that summer.
