Espanyol’s 2003/04 season went all the way to the final day with their top-flight status still at risk. Against Murcia, club captain Raúl Tamudo scored the goal that finally kept them in La Liga, before Lopo added a second in a 2-0 win. Tamudo finished the season with 19 league goals, basically dragging Espanyol away from the drop in this blue-and-white design.

The Shirt From Espanyol’s Last-Day Escape From Relegation

By the middle of 2003/04, Espanyol were in real trouble. They had fallen to the bottom of La Liga and the arrival of Luis Fernández triggered a fightback that the club still remembers as one of its great survival stories. One of the turning points was a wild 5-1 win away at Celta, with Tamudo scoring twice.

But survival still wasn’t secured until the final match. Espanyol hosted already-relegated Murcia knowing they still needed the result and after more than an hour without a goal, Tamudo broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Lopo made it 2-0 and Espanyol stayed in Primera División.

Tamudo ended that campaign with 19 league goals, one of the biggest scoring seasons of his Espanyol career. So this two-season Umbro shirt isn’t just an early-2000s home design, it was there for a campaign where the club’s captain had to score them out of relegation trouble right up to the final day.
