This shirt comes from the final Parma season of two players who would become Juventus pillars: Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram. In summer 2001, Juventus signed both, with Buffon moving for a then-world-record fee for a goalkeeper of around €52 million. Parma had just finished fourth in Serie A, but the double departure helped mark the end of one of European football’s most stacked provincial teams.

The Last Parma Shirt Before Juventus Took Buffon and Thuram Together

Parma’s 2000/01 squad still contained an absurd amount of talent: Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram, Gianluigi Buffon, Marco Di Vaio and Márcio Amoroso were all part of the side. Wearing this Champion design, Parma finished fourth in Serie A and reached the Coppa Italia final.

Then Juventus came shopping. In July 2001 they signed both Buffon and Thuram from Parma, immediately adding two of the club’s biggest stars to Marcello Lippi’s rebuilt side. Buffon’s deal was especially extraordinary: UEFA records the fee at around €52 million, then a world record for a goalkeeper.

The departures became part of a much bigger transition at Parma. UEFA later described the loss of stars including Crespo, Buffon and Thuram as a major factor in the club’s decline from the elite level it had occupied throughout the 1990s. This shirt sits right at that turning point: the final season before two cornerstones of Parma’s golden generation left together for Turin.
