Marseille were just minutes away from winning the French league in 1999 when a goal in another match changed everything. On the final day, Marseille beat Nantes 1-0 while title rivals Bordeaux were drawing 2-2 against PSG. That would have made Marseille champions, but 18-year-old Pascal Feindouno scored for Bordeaux in the 89th minute. Bordeaux won the title by a single point, leaving Marseille with one of the most painful endings to a season in their history.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Marseille Lost the League Title Because of an 89th-Minute Goal in Another Match

On 29 May 1999, Marseille went into the final day of the French league fighting Bordeaux for the title. Marseille were playing Nantes away, while Bordeaux faced PSG in Paris. Rolland Courbis's team needed to win and hope Bordeaux dropped points. With players like Robert Pirès, Laurent Blanc and Fabrizio Ravanelli, Marseille had spent the season fighting for their first league title since 1992.

Marseille took a 1-0 lead against Nantes, but everything depended on the result in Paris. Bordeaux were drawing 2-2 with PSG, which meant Marseille were heading towards the title. Then, in the 89th minute, 18-year-old Pascal Feindouno scored to give Bordeaux a 3-2 win. Marseille had won their own match, but suddenly it wasn't enough. Bordeaux finished with 72 points, just one ahead of Marseille's 71.

The ending was especially disappointing because Marseille were celebrating their 100th anniversary. They had also reached the UEFA Cup final earlier that month, but lost 3-0 to Parma. After coming so close to winning two major trophies, Marseille finished the season without either one. The sky-blue Adidas away shirt, with its Ericsson sponsor and white details, comes from that unforgettable centenary season.
