The DHL logo is what makes this 2011/12 training shirt historically interesting. Manchester United signed a reported £40 million, four-year deal with DHL in August 2011, becoming the first English club to sell the front of its training kit as a separate major sponsorship asset. United chief executive David Gill said the agreement “breaks new ground in the English game.” The deal was so valuable that it was worth more than the main shirt sponsorships of most Premier League clubs at the time.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The £40m Shirt That Invented a New Sponsorship Category

Before 2011, the front of a club’s training shirt was not generally treated as a major standalone commercial property in English football. Manchester United changed that when DHL became their first official training-kit sponsor, putting the logistics company’s bright yellow-and-red logo across Nike training wear like this shirt.

The deal was reported at just over £40 million across four years. That was extraordinary money for clothing that players did not even wear during competitive matches; contemporary reporting noted that the value exceeded the principal shirt deals of most Premier League clubs.

United’s agreement covered training kit worn by the first team, reserves and youth players, as well as clothing used while warming up before domestic matches. That media exposure was the whole point: training sessions, television footage and pre-match coverage suddenly became their own valuable sponsorship space.

The idea proved influential enough that separating match-shirt and training-kit sponsorships became completely normal across elite football. This 2011/12 Nike shirt therefore comes from the season United helped turn something as ordinary as training gear into a multimillion-pound commercial asset.
