Carrick Scored Twice in United’s 7-1 Destruction of Roma

Michael Carrick had only joined Manchester United from Tottenham in the summer of 2006, but one European night made his No. 16 shirt instantly memorable. United went into the second leg against Roma trailing 2-1 from the first match and needing a comeback at Old Trafford.

Carrick started it himself. After just 11 minutes, he lifted a superb finish over goalkeeper Doni to put United ahead on the night. United then exploded, scoring four before half-time and Carrick struck again after the break as the scoreline eventually reached 7-1.

It was a a Champions League quarter-final record victory, with United progressing 8-3 on aggregate. Carrick later called the performance “the stuff of dreams” after scoring twice on one of Old Trafford’s most famous European nights.
