On 13 January 2002, David Beckham scored a free-kick against Southampton to help Manchester United win 3-1 and return to the top of the Premier League. Southampton had scored after just three minutes, but Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised before Beckham put United ahead just before half-time. Ole Gunnar Solskjær added a third in the second half. Beckham scored wearing the white version of United's famous reversible centenary shirt.

Beckham Scored a Free-Kick That Sent United Back to the Top of the League

On 13 January 2002, Manchester United travelled to Southampton looking to continue their strong run of results. Things started badly when James Beattie scored for Southampton after just three minutes. Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised in the ninth minute, but the teams remained level until just before half-time.

Then David Beckham stepped up to take a free-kick. He scored in the 45th minute to give United a 2-1 lead, before Ole Gunnar Solskjær made it 3-1 in the second half. The victory sent Manchester United to the top of the Premier League for the first time that season. It was another example of Beckham making the difference with his free-kick ability.

The 2001/02 season was also special for Manchester United's shirts. To celebrate 100 years since the club adopted its current name, Umbro created a reversible design: white on one side and gold on the other. The white side was used as the away shirt, while the gold side became the third kit. It was also Umbro's final season making United's kits before Nike took over, giving Beckham's number 7 shirt an interesting place in the club's history.
