Liverpool Won 9-0 With Eight Different Scorers and Gave John Aldridge the Perfect Goodbye

On 12 September 1989, Liverpool hosted Crystal Palace at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish's team had started the season unbeaten, but nobody expected what happened next. Steve Nicol opened the scoring after seven minutes, Steve McMahon added another and Ian Rush made it 3-0 just before half-time.

In the second half, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley extended the lead to 5-0. Then Liverpool won a penalty. John Aldridge was preparing to leave the club for Real Sociedad, so Dalglish decided to bring him off the bench to take it. Aldridge scored with his first touch, giving himself the perfect farewell in front of the Anfield crowd. After the match, he threw his shirt and boots into the Kop as a thank-you to the supporters.

John Barnes and Glenn Hysén added two more goals before Nicol scored his second to complete the 9-0 victory. Eight different Liverpool players had scored, a remarkable achievement. Liverpool continued their strong season and won the First Division title in April 1990, beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 to secure their 18th league championship.
