Jamaica's First Adidas Shirt Launch Was So Popular It Crashed the Website

On 6 February 2023, Jamaica launched its first football shirts with Adidas, ending its previous partnership with Umbro. Instead of going for a standard kit launch, Adidas worked with British-Jamaican designer Grace Wales Bonner. She created a yellow home shirt with thin green stripes, taking inspiration from Jamaican culture and 1980s fashion.

The shirts immediately attracted attention. Demand was so high on launch day that the Adidas website temporarily crashed. The collection was more than just football shirts, with a pre-match jersey and a reversible jacket also included. It brought together football and fashion in a way that appealed to fans well beyond Jamaica.

That summer, Jamaica's women's national team gave the shirt an even bigger story. At the 2023 World Cup, the Reggae Girlz held France and Brazil to 0-0 draws and beat Panama 1-0. They became the first Caribbean team to reach the Women's World Cup knockout stages, eliminating Brazil in the process. Jamaica eventually lost 1-0 to Colombia, but their run made 2023 an important year for Jamaican football.
