Benzema Arrived at His First Major Tournament as Ligue 1’s Best Player at 20

Benzema entered EURO 2008 with enormous expectations. Still only 20, he had just fired Lyon to another league title, finished as Ligue 1’s 20-goal top scorer and been named the division’s best player. France gave him the number 9 for his first senior international tournament.

He started the opening 0-0 draw against Romania in this home design, then returned to the XI for the must-win final group game against Italy. Benzema came close to scoring when Gianluigi Buffon pushed away his swerving effort, but France lost 2-0 and went home with one point and only one goal scored across the tournament.

The shirt itself had been designed with inspiration from France’s triumphant EURO 1984 era, making the contrast even sharper. After the 2008 disappointment, Adidas quickly moved on: France debuted an entirely new home design against Sweden that August, giving this Benzema-era shirt an unusually short life at international level.
