The Tournament That Got Zidane Called “Made in Heaven”

France arrived at EURO 2000 as reigning world champions, but Zidane somehow raised his level again. Wearing this Adidas home design and his familiar number 10, he became the centre of a team chasing an achievement no reigning world champion had managed before.

His best work came when the tournament tightened. Zidane scored from a free-kick in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Spain, then converted the decisive golden-goal penalty against Portugal to send France into the final. UEFA later named him Player of the Tournament.

France then beat Italy 2-1 after Sylvain Wiltord equalised in stoppage time and David Trezeguet scored the golden goal. The victory made France the first reigning world champions to win the European Championship, turning this shirt into part of one of the national team’s greatest eras.
