Barcelona Replaced Their Famous Stripes With Squares for the First Time in 2019

On 3 June 2019, Barcelona revealed a home shirt that looked completely different from anything the club had worn before. Instead of the traditional red-and-blue stripes, Nike introduced a chequered design made up of large squares. It was a big change for a club whose stripes had been part of its identity for more than a century.

The idea came from Barcelona itself. Nike based the pattern on the Eixample neighbourhood, famous for its grid of streets and square city blocks. The club wanted the shirt to represent its connection to the city, rather than simply repeat an older design.

The shirt also featured during some memorable matches. On 7 December 2019, Lionel Messi celebrated his sixth Ballon d'Or in front of the Camp Nou crowd before scoring a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory over Mallorca. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring, while Luis Suárez scored with an impressive backheel. It was one of Barcelona's best attacking performances of the season, wearing a home shirt that still stands out for its unusual design.
