Barcelona’s 2002/03 season was bizarre: domestically they finished sixth, their worst league position in 15 years, yet in Europe they produced an extraordinary winning streak. Barça won 11 consecutive European matches, including qualifying and nine straight in the Champions League proper: a competition record that lasted until Bayern broke it in 2013.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Barça Won 11 European Matches in a Row While Finishing Sixth in La Liga

Very little about Barcelona’s 2002/03 season made sense. The club changed managers during a turbulent campaign and eventually finished sixth in La Liga, their lowest position for 15 years.

In the Champions League, though, they suddenly became almost unbeatable. Barcelona won nine consecutive matches in the competition proper and 11 straight European games if the qualifying victories over Legia Warszawa are included. The run peaked with a 3-0 win over Inter at Camp Nou, when goals from Saviola, Cocu and Kluivert pushed Barça into the record books.

That Champions League record stood for more than a decade, until Bayern finally surpassed the nine-match competition streak in 2013. So this 2002/03 training shirt comes from one of Barça’s strangest seasons: struggling badly at home while simultaneously putting together one of the longest winning runs Europe had ever seen.
