Gerrard Assisted England's Opening Goal in All Three Euro 2012 Group Matches

Steven Gerrard went into Euro 2012 as England captain, with Roy Hodgson having taken charge just weeks before the tournament. In the opening match against France, Gerrard delivered a free-kick that Joleon Lescott headed in to give England the lead. The game finished 1-1, giving England a point against one of the group's strongest teams.

Four days later, England faced Sweden. In the 23rd minute, Gerrard sent a long cross into the box and Andy Carroll headed it into the net. Sweden later turned the game around to lead 2-1, but England fought back to win 3-2. Against Ukraine, Gerrard was involved again, delivering the cross that led to Wayne Rooney's only goal of the tournament. Three group games, three opening goals created by Gerrard.

England finished top of Group D ahead of France but lost to Italy on penalties in the quarter-finals. Despite the early exit, Gerrard's performances earned him a place in UEFA's 23-man Team of the Tournament. Only Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimović were selected from teams that hadn't reached the semi-finals. It was one of Gerrard's best tournaments for England and this navy Umbro away design was part of that summer.
