THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt from Petr Čech’s “Batman” Match

This Puma home shirt belongs to the Czech Republic’s road to Euro 2012 rather than the tournament itself.

Its red base is broken up by small white and blue details, using all three colours of the Czech flag. Puma kept the front unusually clean: no sponsor, no large graphics and only the national crest and Puma branding across the chest.

The shirt was worn during the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign by a Czech side built around captain Tomáš Rosický, Milan Baroš, Petr Jiráček and goalkeeper Petr Čech. After finishing behind Spain in their group, the Czech Republic had to face Montenegro in a two-legged play-off.

They won the first match 2–0 in Prague, with Rosický playing a major role in the performance, before completing a 3–0 aggregate victory in Montenegro. That result sent them to Euro 2012, where they would eventually reach the quarter-finals, but by then, Puma had already introduced a new shirt.

The simple red look and its connection to Rosický’s final years as national-team captain make it a particularly good piece for collectors who prefer the less obvious chapters of international football.
