CA Boca Juniors 2005 Home Centenary Shirt (Small)

Boca Juniors turned 100 on 3 April 2005 and the club wanted to celebrate with something different. Together with Nike, Boca created a collection of shirts inspired by its history. One of the biggest changes was removing the main shirt sponsor and replacing it with an X, standing for Xentenario, the name used for the anniversary celebrations. 

It was also a business decision. Boca normally sold around 300,000 shirts a year, but the club hoped to sell 1.5 million during its centenary. The idea was that supporters would be more interested in buying a shirt celebrating their club's history than one advertising a company. The X design kept Boca's traditional blue and yellow colours while making the 100th anniversary the main feature. 

The celebrations weren't without controversy. Another anniversary shirt brought back a yellow diagonal band inspired by Boca's early designs, which looked a little too similar to rivals River Plate. Even Diego Maradona publicly criticised it. The centenary collection became a major talking point in Argentina and this blue-and-yellow Nike shirt is one of the designs that came out of Boca's 100th birthday celebrations.
