Torres’ Final Farewell to the Calderón

This Atlético Madrid 2016/17 home shirt carries Fernando Torres’ famous number 9 from the club’s final season at the Vicente Calderón.

On 21 May 2017, Atlético hosted Athletic Club in their last competitive match at the stadium they had called home for more than 50 years. Torres opened the scoring after eight minutes before adding a spectacular scissor kick just three minutes later.

Atlético eventually won 3–1, giving the Calderón a perfect farewell. For Torres (an academy graduate, former captain and lifelong supporter) it was a fitting role in one of the stadium’s most emotional matches.

Torres scored ten goals in all competitions that season, while Atlético finished third in La Liga and reached the semi-finals of both the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
