THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Adidas Rebuilt the Shirt From Seaman’s 18-Goal Title Season

Look closely and this is basically a trip back to 1990/91. Adidas based the Icon goalkeeper shirt on Arsenal’s green-and-navy keeper design from that season, recreating its geometric pattern, oversized silhouette, dark collar and white three stripes. Even the small “AFC” detailing around the collar references the original early-90s shirt.

That makes the inspiration particularly good: 1990/91 was David Seaman’s first season at Arsenal. He had arrived from QPR for £1.3 million (a British-record fee for a goalkeeper at the time) and immediately became part of one of the meanest title-winning defences English football had seen. Arsenal conceded only 18 league goals in 38 matches and lost just once on their way to the First Division championship.

This shirt therefore isn't a forgotten 2022/23 match kit; it's Adidas deliberately resurrecting the look worn at the beginning of Seaman’s Arsenal career. The original carried JVC across the chest, whereas this modern Icon version strips away the sponsor and turns the same unmistakable green pattern into a cleaner retro tribute.
