THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Xerez Beat Hércules Twice but Still Missed Out on Promotion

Xerez CD went into the 1999/00 season hoping to return to Spain's second division after being relegated in 1998. Managed by Nene Montero, they finished third in their Segunda División B group and qualified for the promotion play-offs. A 3-0 victory over Manchego had already secured their play-off place with three regular-season matches remaining.

Their first opponent was Hércules and Xerez started well with a 2-1 home victory thanks to goals from Fali Montes and Pineda. After losing 2-0 away to Universidad de Las Palmas and drawing the return match 0-0, Xerez needed another big result. They delivered one, beating Hércules 3-1 at the Rico Pérez stadium. Unfortunately, Universidad were also winning their matches.

The decisive blow came when Xerez lost 3-1 away to Zaragoza B. Universidad de Las Palmas secured promotion, while Xerez finished second in the play-off group with eight points. The club would eventually return to Segunda División the following season, but the 1999/00 campaign ended in frustration. This blue Mobel shirt comes from that period when Xerez were fighting to climb back up Spanish football.
