Wales 1998 Home (Large)

Lotto’s 1998/00 Wales home shirt took the national symbol and worked it directly into the fabric. Across the red body sits a subtle image of Y Ddraig Goch (the Welsh dragon) woven as a watermark, rather than simply added as another badge or graphic. The white polo collar and green-and-white trim completed a design that was unmistakably Welsh without being overly complicated. 

The shirt belonged to Wales’ Euro 2000 qualifying campaign, a period featuring players such as Ryan Giggs, Gary Speed, Mark Hughes and Robbie Savage. Results were wildly inconsistent: Wales produced promising wins over Denmark and Belarus but also suffered heavy defeats as qualification slipped away. 

The period also marked a major change on the bench. Bobby Gould left after the 4-0 defeat to Italy in June 1999 and Mark Hughes eventually became permanent manager, beginning his managerial career with the national team he had represented for years as a player.

For collectors, though, the strongest part of the shirt is still the design itself. Lotto produced several adventurous Wales kits during the 1990s, but embedding the national dragon directly into the material made this one especially distinctive: a detail that is easy to miss from a distance but defines the shirt once you notice it.
