Valenciennes were bottom of Ligue 1 after 17 matches with only 11 points and relegation looked very real. Then they somehow went 13 league games unbeaten and climbed all the way to 12th, despite not winning a single away match all season. Jean-Claude Darcheville’s January arrival helped trigger the turnaround and this shirt ended up representing one of the strangest survival jobs in Ligue 1 that year.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

They Finished 12th Without Winning a Single Away Game

By December 2008, this shirt was attached to a disaster. Valenciennes had taken just 11 points from their first 17 league games, won only twice and sat dead last in Ligue 1. They had also lost Steve Savidan in the summer, the striker who had carried much of their goalscoring threat in previous seasons.

Then came one of the season’s biggest turnarounds. January signing Jean-Claude Darcheville gave the team a lift and Valenciennes suddenly went 13 consecutive league matches without defeat. By March, they were the only Ligue 1 side still unbeaten in 2009.

The weirdest part is how they survived: Valenciennes finished 12th, yet their away record for the entire league season was 0 wins, 10 draws and 9 defeats. Almost all the rescue work happened at home, including a 2-0 win over Lyon late in the season. A team that looked doomed in December somehow climbed eight places without winning once on the road.
