But the biggest headlines came after the final whistle, when a fight broke out between players from both teams. Valencia defender David Navarro ran onto the pitch and punched Inter's Nicolás Burdisso, leading to a seven-month ban from European football.

Valencia Knocked Inter Out of the Champions League, Then a Fight Broke Out

On 6 March 2007, Valencia hosted Inter Milan in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie. The first match had finished 2-2 in Italy, thanks to goals from David Villa and David Silva. Valencia only needed a goalless draw at Mestalla to reach the quarter-finals and that was exactly what they got.

But instead of celebrating a place in the next round, the players ended up in a fight after the final whistle. Valencia's David Navarro, who hadn't played in the match, ran onto the pitch and punched Inter defender Nicolás Burdisso, breaking his nose. UEFA later banned Navarro from European competition for seven months.

Valencia went on to face Chelsea in the quarter-finals. They drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge before losing 2-1 at Mestalla, with Michael Essien scoring Chelsea's winner in stoppage time. It ended Valencia's European run, but the season still brought a fourth-place finish in La Liga and Champions League qualification for the following year.
