The Training Vest From Villa’s 4-Minute Hat-Trick Season

David Villa’s first season at Valencia produced one of those stats that sounds slightly fake.

On 23 April 2006, Valencia were drawing 0–0 away at Athletic Club with less than ten minutes left. Then Villa scored in the 81st minute. He scored again two minutes later. And then again in the 85th.

His first Valencia hat-trick took just 4 minutes and 46 seconds, a run the club still describes as one of the fastest hat-tricks in La Liga history. Valencia suddenly won the match 3–0.

Villa had only joined from Real Zaragoza that summer, but finished his debut Valencia campaign with 28 goals in all competitions, establishing himself immediately as the team’s new attacking star.

The team itself also recovered strongly under new coach Quique Sánchez Flores, finishing third in La Liga and qualifying for the Champions League.

This sleeveless Nike Total 90 vest belongs to Valencia’s training collection from that exact season. It is a much less common piece than the match shirts, but it comes from the year Villa arrived and immediately made scoring goals look stupidly easy.
