Four Days from Gold Cup Champions to Copa América

This wasn't simply the standard USA away shirt of the period. Nike produced this distinctive blue-and-white pinstriped design for the 2007 Copa América, giving the United States a separate look for their trip to Venezuela.

The timing of that tournament was brutal. The USA had just won the CONCACAF Gold Cup, beating Mexico 2-1 in Chicago on 24 June. Copa América began only four days later, forcing Bob Bradley to shuffle his roster between the two competitions; the team headed for Venezuela almost immediately after the Gold Cup celebrations.

Their first match came against an Argentina side packed with stars. Wearing this exact blue pinstripe shirt, the USA took a shock lead when Eddie Johnson won and converted a penalty after eight minutes. Argentina recovered through Hernán Crespo twice, Pablo Aimar and Carlos Tevez to win 4-1.

The USA eventually lost all three group games, but the shirt remains tied to an unusual tournament appearance: their first Copa América since 1995, played almost immediately after winning their own continental championship. For collectors, that short-lived Copa América identity is what separates this pinstriped Nike design from the much more common USA shirts surrounding it.
