This huge red-and-blue USA graphic comes from Adidas’ Team USA Olympic look for Seoul 1988, the Games where Florence Griffith Joyner produced one of athletics’ untouchable performances. She ran the 200 metres in 21.34 seconds, breaking the world record for the second time that day. Nearly four decades later, World Athletics still lists 21.34 as the women’s 200m world record.

The Team USA Jacket From the Games Where Flo-Jo Set a World Record That Still Stands

Adidas covered this white nylon warm-up with enormous red-and-blue USA lettering, Olympic branding and a smaller USA graphic across the back: a very different approach from the cleaner national-team tracksuits that followed.

Seoul 1988 gave Team USA one of the most ridiculous records in Olympic history. On 29 September, Florence Griffith Joyner ran 21.56 in her 200m semi-final, then came back later that day and demolished her own new world record with 21.34 in the final.

That 21.34 has survived every generation since. World Athletics still lists Flo-Jo as the current women’s 200m world-record holder, making this jacket part of the Team USA visual era attached to a record that has now lasted for almost four decades.
