The Shirt from a Pichichi Nobody Expected

This Puma shirt comes from one of the strangest individual seasons in Las Palmas history.

The team struggled throughout 2003–04 and eventually finished 20th, dropping into Segunda División B. The club’s own history describes the campaign as disastrous.

But while Las Palmas were going down, Rubén Castro was doing the complete opposite. The academy graduate scored 22 league goals and finished as the Segunda División’s top scorer, four clear of his nearest rival.

That meant the division’s best goalscorer came from one of its relegated teams. His performances were so difficult to ignore that Deportivo de La Coruña signed him after the season ended.

So this is not remembered as a trophy shirt. It comes from the year a young local striker kept scoring while everything around him was falling apart and announced the talent that would eventually make him one of Spanish football’s most relentless goalscorers.
