Nike’s 2018/19 Turkey shirt included an unusually practical change based directly on player feedback. The Turkish FA explained that previous shirt numbers could make the fabric stick to players in hot conditions, so Nike introduced different material beneath the numbers and adjusted their positioning to improve ventilation. The design also enlarged Turkey’s crescent and star over the heart and added the symbol again behind the collar. Turkey debuted the shirt against the Republic of Ireland on 23 March 2018, winning 1-0 through Mehmet Topal’s second-half volley.

The Shirt Redesigned After Players Said the Numbers Stuck to Them

When Turkey and Nike introduced this shirt in March 2018, some of its most interesting changes were not purely visual. The Turkish FA said the design had been developed partly from feedback given by the national-team players themselves, who complained that previous shirts could stick to their bodies around the printed numbers in hot conditions.

Nike responded by using a different material beneath the numbers and positioning them to leave more breathable space around the shirt’s graphics. It is a small detail, but one that makes this kit a good example of performance feedback directly changing a national-team shirt.

Visually, Nike kept Turkey’s traditional identity but made it more understated. The shirt was almost entirely red, with a darker tonal band across the chest, a black collar and an enlarged crescent and star positioned over the heart. The national symbol also appeared again on the back of the collar.

The new kit made its debut on 23 March 2018 against the Republic of Ireland in Antalya. Mehmet Topal scored the only goal with a 52nd-minute volley, giving Turkey a 1-0 win in the shirt’s first match. The design then carried Turkey into the first-ever UEFA Nations League campaign, giving it a clear place in the transition to a new era of European international football.
