Sweden did something unusual for Euro 2012: Umbro created a brand-new home shirt but kept this 2011 away design for another year, making the navy-and-yellow sash the older half of their tournament kit set. It was worn in Sweden’s opening match against co-hosts Ukraine, where captain Zlatan Ibrahimović scored in the 52nd minute to put Sweden ahead. Three minutes later Andriy Shevchenko equalised, then headed in again in the 62nd minute to turn the match into a 2-1 Ukraine win.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Sash from Ibrahimović vs Shevchenko

Umbro originally launched this Sweden away shirt in March 2011, giving the traditionally conservative national-team colours a much bolder look. The dark navy base was cut by a wide yellow diagonal sash, part of Umbro’s celebrated Tailored range.

What makes it unusual is that it survived a kit change. Before Euro 2012, Sweden unveiled an entirely new yellow home shirt, but the Swedish FA confirmed that the year-old sash design would remain as the away option.

That decision gave the shirt its biggest stage in Sweden’s opening game against Ukraine in Kyiv. With the co-hosts playing in yellow, Sweden switched to this navy away design. Captain Zlatan Ibrahimović opened the scoring after 52 minutes, turning in Kim Källström’s delivery.

The lead lasted only three minutes. Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko, playing in the stadium associated with Dynamo Kyiv, scored twice with headers to turn the game around and give the hosts a 2-1 victory. So this short-lived Umbro away shirt ended up at the centre of a Euro opener decided almost entirely by two of the era’s great strikers: Ibrahimović at one end, Shevchenko at the other.
