Sunderland wore this shirt when they beat Newcastle 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in October 2008, their first home win over their rivals in 28 years. Djibril Cissé opened the scoring before Kieran Richardson smashed in the winning free-kick. It became one of the standout Tyne-Wear derby moments of the decade.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Shirt That Ended a 28-Year Derby Wait

One of the biggest moments in this shirt came against Newcastle in October 2008. Sunderland had not beaten their rivals at home for 28 years, but that run finally ended at the Stadium of Light.

Djibril Cissé gave Sunderland the lead before Newcastle equalised through Shola Ameobi. With 15 minutes left, Kieran Richardson fired a powerful free-kick into the top corner to make it 2-1.

The win gave Sunderland long-awaited local bragging rights and briefly lifted them into the Premier League’s top six. Cissé, who spent the season on loan from Marseille, finished his Sunderland spell with 11 goals before returning to France.
