The Season Stoke Finally Went European

Stoke City’s 2011/12 season was not built around glamour, which is exactly why its European story feels so good.

After reaching the previous season’s FA Cup final, Stoke qualified for the Europa League and entered the competition’s group stage for the first time. They were drawn against Dynamo Kyiv, Beşiktaş and Maccabi Tel Aviv, meaning thousands of miles of travel for a club more closely associated with wet Premier League afternoons than European tours.

They handled it surprisingly well. Stoke progressed from the group and reached the round of 32, where they were eventually eliminated by Valencia. The same season also included a 14th-place Premier League finish and another FA Cup run to the quarter-finals.

This blue-and-black Adidas shirt was the official away design from that campaign, deliberately giving Stoke an Inter-style look that felt completely different from their usual red-and-white stripes.
