Sporting Kansas City started life in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz, wearing some of the most colourful shirts in MLS. But the club had to change its name after a trademark dispute involving an electronics chain called Nobody Beats the Wiz. The team became the Kansas City Wizards in 1996 before changing again to Sporting Kansas City in 2010. In 2024, Adidas brought back the old Wizards crest and rainbow design for a third shirt celebrating the club's early years.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Kansas City Had to Change Its Original Name Because of an Electronics Store

When Major League Soccer launched in 1996, Kansas City's new team was called the Kansas City Wiz. The name came from a competition in which supporters suggested names for the club. More than 3,200 entries were submitted and one of the winning suggestions came from a nine-year-old girl. The team also became known for its rainbow shirts, which looked very different from most football kits at the time.

But the name didn't last long. A New York electronics chain called Nobody Beats the Wiz raised trademark concerns, and the club changed its name to the Kansas City Wizards in November 1996. The colourful shirts stayed, and in 2000, the Wizards won their first MLS Cup. Ten years later, the club announced another new name: Sporting Kansas City.

In July 2024, Adidas decided to bring back some of that 1990s history. The new third shirt featured the old Wizards crest, the KANSAS CITY lettering and a modern version of the famous rainbow pattern. Even the original MLS logo appeared on the back of the collar. It was a fun way to bring back a part of the club's history that many younger supporters had never seen.
