Spain's Manager Hated This Yellow Shirt, Then They Won 3-0 in It

Before Spain's Euro 2008 semi-final against Russia, there was a small problem. Both teams normally played in red and Russia had the right to wear their home kit. That meant Spain had to switch to their yellow Adidas away shirt. Manager Luis Aragonés wasn't happy about it. He personally disliked the colour and joked that it looked more like mustard than yellow.

On 26 June 2008, Spain walked onto the pitch in Vienna wearing yellow. After a goalless first half, Xavi opened the scoring in the 50th minute following a pass from Andrés Iniesta. Dani Güiza added a second and David Silva made it 3-0. Spain were through to their first European Championship final since 1984.

Three days later, Spain beat Germany 1-0 in the final thanks to Fernando Torres's goal, winning their first major trophy in 44 years. It was the beginning of a period that would also bring the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 titles. This yellow Adidas design has a particularly fun place in that history: the shirt Spain's own manager didn't like became the one they wore to reach the final.
