THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

Raúl Set Up a Goal Against the Team That Went on to Win Euro 2004

On 16 June 2004, Spain faced Greece in their second match of Euro 2004. Raúl was captain and started alongside his former Real Madrid teammate Fernando Morientes. Spain had already beaten Russia 1-0 and were hoping another victory would secure their place in the quarter-finals.

In the 28th minute, Raúl took the ball from Greek defender Michalis Kapsis near the penalty area. He passed to Morientes, who moved past a defender and scored to put Spain ahead. Raúl nearly scored himself in the second half, but sent two headers wide. Greece equalised through Angelos Charisteas and the match ended 1-1. Despite the result, Raúl was named Man of the Match.

Spain then lost 1-0 to Portugal in their final group match and went home early. Greece, meanwhile, surprised everyone by reaching the final and beating Portugal to become European champions. For Raúl, who was already Spain's all-time leading goalscorer, it was another disappointing international tournament. This red Adidas shirt comes from his time as Spain captain, before the country's famous run of three consecutive major trophies began in 2008.
