Spain 2000 Away - Valeron 21 (Medium)

Spain arrived at Euro 2000 with players including Raúl, Pep Guardiola, Gaizka Mendieta and Juan Carlos Valerón. But their tournament started badly with a 1-0 defeat against Norway. A 2-1 victory over Slovenia kept their hopes alive, leaving them needing another win against Yugoslavia in their final group match. Valerón had started both opening games, but remained on the bench for the deciding match. 

On 21 June, Spain fell behind three times against Yugoslavia. Alfonso and Pedro Munitis scored to keep them in the game, but Slobodan Komljenović put Yugoslavia 3-2 ahead in the 75th minute. As the match entered stoppage time, Spain were heading out of the competition. Then Mendieta scored a penalty to make it 3-3. It still wasn't enough, because Spain needed all three points. 

With almost no time remaining, Alfonso scored his second goal to complete a 4-3 comeback and send Spain into the quarter-finals. They eventually lost 2-1 to France, who went on to win the tournament. For Spain, the match against Yugoslavia remains one of their most memorable European Championship comebacks and Valerón's number 21 comes from that Euro 2000 squad.
