The First Team to Qualify

This Senegal 2020/21 Puma Stadium League jersey comes from the qualifying campaign that carried the Lions of Teranga towards the Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal began with victories over Congo and Eswatini before international football was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. When qualifying resumed in November 2020, Aliou Cissé’s team defeated Guinea-Bissau 2–0 at home.

Four days later, Sadio Mané scored an 82nd-minute winner in the return fixture. The 1–0 victory gave Senegal a perfect 12 points from four matches and made them the first country to secure qualification for the tournament, with two games still remaining.

The competition was eventually postponed until early 2022, when Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties to win the first Africa Cup of Nations title in their history.
