The Shirt That Ended a 34-Year Wait

Real Sociedad's road to the 2020 Copa del Rey final was already memorable before they even reached Seville.

After knocking out several opponents, including a stunning 4-3 victory away at Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, Imanol Alguacil's side secured a place in the final against Athletic Club. It was the first all-Basque Copa del Rey final between the two rivals, making the occasion even more special.

Originally scheduled for April 2020, the match was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two clubs eventually met on 3 April 2021 at La Cartuja in Seville, with no supporters in the stands.

Real Sociedad had created a limited-edition shirt specifically for the occasion, with seven stripes representing their seven matches on the way to the final.

The match itself was tense, with very few clear chances. In the second half, Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up to take a penalty after Portu was fouled by Iñigo Martínez. The Sociedad captain calmly converted, scoring the only goal of the game.

That 1-0 victory gave Real Sociedad their first Copa del Rey since 1987, ending a 34-year wait for a major trophy.

This special-edition shirt was created for that exact final and became part of one of the happiest moments in the club's recent history.
