Real Madrid Won La Liga in Šuker's First Season, Finishing Two Points Ahead of Barcelona

In the summer of 1996, Real Madrid were rebuilding after a disappointing season in which they finished sixth in La Liga. Fabio Capello arrived as manager, alongside new signings Davor Šuker, Predrag Mijatović, Clarence Seedorf and Roberto Carlos. Šuker had already made a name for himself at Sevilla, but joining Madrid gave him the chance to fight for major trophies.

Šuker quickly became one of Madrid's most important players. Playing alongside Raúl and Mijatović, he scored 24 league goals in 38 appearances. Madrid remained unbeaten until their 25th league match, building a strong lead over their rivals. Barcelona, led by Ronaldo Nazário, kept the title race alive until the final weeks.

On 14 June 1997, Real Madrid faced Atlético at the Santiago Bernabéu, knowing a victory would secure the championship. Raúl and Fernando Hierro scored before half-time, and Mijatović added a third after the break. Madrid won 3-1 and celebrated their 27th league title. They finished the season with 92 points, just two ahead of Barcelona. Šuker's 24 goals had played a huge part in bringing the trophy back to Madrid, making his first season at the club a successful one.
