THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Number Seven Nobody Expected

Mariano Díaz returned to Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 after scoring regularly for Lyon. The transfer already carried pressure, but then the club gave him the number seven left behind by Cristiano Ronaldo.

That number had previously belonged to Ronaldo, Raúl, Emilio Butragueño and other major figures in Real Madrid history. Mariano admitted that taking it brought an enormous responsibility, especially because he was returning as a squad striker rather than arriving as Ronaldo’s obvious replacement. 

His comeback began almost perfectly. Mariano came off the bench against Roma in the Champions League and scored from outside the area in a 3–0 victory. It was his first appearance after returning and immediately gave the new number seven a memorable opening moment. 

The shirt itself also has an unusual story. Adidas created the coral third design using Parley Ocean Plastic made from recycled ocean waste, with the colour chosen to reference coral threatened by pollution. It was one of Real Madrid’s first full seasonal kits built so directly around recycled material. 

It is one of those Real Madrid shirts where the name on the back creates more conversation than the usual superstar choice.
