Ronaldo started the 2013/14 Champions League with a hat-trick away to Galatasaray and basically never stopped. By the semi-final against Bayern Munich, he had already moved beyond the old single-season European Cup record, scoring twice in the 4-0 win in Munich to take his tally to 16.

Then came Lisbon. Real Madrid were seconds away from losing the final before Sergio Ramos equalised against Atlético in stoppage time. Madrid eventually won 4-1 after extra time and Ronaldo scored the final goal from the penalty spot, his 17th of the campaign.

That number still matters. Ronaldo’s 17 goals in 2013/14 are the most ever scored in a single Champions League season. So this Ronaldo 7 belongs to the year he didn’t just win La Décima, he set a scoring record nobody has managed to beat since.
