Roberto Carlos Scored a Free-Kick in This Shirt Then Figo Won It With Another

Real Madrid’s trip across the city to Vallecas on 9 November 2002 turned into a strangely perfect Roberto Carlos match. Ronaldo put Madrid ahead, Rayo equalised and in the 57th minute Roberto Carlos stepped over a free-kick and drove it low along the ground to restore the lead.

That still wasn't enough. Julio Álvarez made it 2-2 from the penalty spot, and Madrid were heading for a draw until Figo scored another free-kick in stoppage time, completing a 3-2 victory.

The season eventually ended with another Roberto Carlos goal carrying much bigger stakes: on the final day, he scored alongside a Ronaldo brace as Madrid beat Athletic Club 3-1 to win La Liga by just two points over Real Sociedad. That title-clinching match was at the Bernabéu in the white home kit, not this example, but it capped a 2002/03 campaign in which Roberto Carlos scored five league goals from left-back.
