Real Madrid Won La Liga in 1987 After Playing 44 Matches

The 1986/87 La Liga season was an unusual one. After the first 34 matches, the league introduced an extra stage in which the top six teams played each other again to decide the champion. It meant Real Madrid had to play 44 league matches, ten more than in a normal season.

Under manager Leo Beenhakker, Madrid had one of the strongest teams in Spain, with players including Emilio Butragueño, Míchel and Hugo Sánchez. They finished the regular stage in first place and continued leading during the play-offs. On 14 June 1987, Butragueño scored twice and Solana added another in a 3-1 victory away to Zaragoza, securing the title with one match remaining.

Madrid finished with 66 points, three ahead of Barcelona, while Hugo Sánchez won the Pichichi Trophy with 34 goals. It was the club's second consecutive league title and the beginning of three straight championships under Beenhakker. The white Hummel shirt with purple chevrons comes from this period, when Real Madrid were building their run of five consecutive Spanish league titles between 1986 and 1990.
