THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

The Rayo Shirt That Turned the Sash into Lightning

Rayo Vallecano originally played in plain white. The diagonal stripe only arrived around 1949, when the club adopted a design inspired by Argentina’s River Plate. It became so important that supporters are still known as Los Franjirrojos (the red-sashed ones).

Umbro later gave that old symbol a very literal Rayo twist. Instead of using a clean diagonal band, the 2023–24 collection turned it into a jagged lightning bolt running across the entire shirt.

The third version is the boldest of the set: a gold body with a huge black bolt, white details and the full-colour crest. It is one of those shirts that makes complete sense only after somebody explains the name: Rayo means lightning in Spanish.

That is what makes this design so good. It connects a stripe borrowed from River Plate more than 70 years ago with the symbol hidden inside Rayo’s own name, then makes the whole thing impossible to miss.
