Rangers 1998/00 Away #9 (Small)

In the summer of 1998, Rangers appointed Dick Advocaat as manager and began rebuilding their squad. While the club spent heavily on players like Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Andrei Kanchelskis, one of their best signings cost nothing. Rod Wallace arrived on a free transfer from Leeds United, where he had spent seven seasons, and immediately became Rangers' main goalscorer. Wearing #9, he scored 19 league goals and helped the team win the Scottish Premier League and League Cup. Rangers also had players like Barry Ferguson, Jörg Albertz and Arthur Numan in a team that quickly became one of the strongest in Scotland. 

The biggest moment of Wallace's first season came on 29 May 1999, when Rangers faced Celtic in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park. Early in the second half, Wallace found space inside the penalty area and scored past Jonathan Gould to put Rangers 1-0 ahead. Celtic couldn't find an equaliser, and Wallace's goal secured the Scottish Cup, completing Rangers' first domestic treble since 1992/93. He ended the campaign with 27 goals in all competitions, despite having arrived without a transfer fee. 

The red Nike away shirt is closely associated with that successful 1998/99 season, especially with Wallace's #9 on the back. It's a particularly nice option for Rangers collectors who want something different from the usual blue home shirts, with a direct connection to one of the club's most successful seasons of the late 1990s.
