This colour did not come from PSG history, it came from Jordan sneaker history. The blazing “Infrared” shade was made famous by the Air Jordan VI in 1991 and Jordan reused it almost three decades later for PSG’s 2019/20 away shirt. PSG debuted the kit against Inter in Macau just two days after unveiling it, turning one of Jordan’s most recognisable sneaker colours into a full football strip.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHIRT

PSG Put the Air Jordan VI’s Famous “Infrared” Colour on a Football Shirt

Jordan did not choose this colour just because it looked loud. PSG’s 2019/20 away shirt was built around “Infrared,” a colour deeply associated with Jordan Brand and famously used on the Air Jordan VI in 1991. The result was almost completely fluorescent red-orange, broken only by black logos, collar detailing and sleeve trim.

The shirt also marked how far the PSG-Jordan experiment had moved beyond a normal kit partnership. PSG stated that, for the second season running, they were the only football club in the world unveiling sport and lifestyle pieces co-designed with Jordan Brand. The shirt was intended for both the men's and women's teams, with PSG specifically promoting Kylian Mbappé, Marco Verratti and Marie-Antoinette Katoto around the launch.

There was almost no gap between launch and pitch. PSG revealed the shirt on 25 July 2019 and debuted it against Inter in Macau on 27 July; Thilo Kehrer scored for PSG before Inter equalised in stoppage time and won the resulting penalty shootout.
