Portugal wore this Nike training range during EURO 2008, at a moment when Cristiano Ronaldo was arguably the hottest player in world football. He arrived in camp fresh from Manchester United’s Premier League and Champions League double, having scored 42 goals in 2007/08 and won the European Golden Shoe.

Ronaldo carried that form into the tournament. Against the Czech Republic he scored Portugal’s second goal and created two more as a 3-1 victory secured their place in the quarter-finals as group winners. Portugal’s run ended against Germany, but Ronaldo’s individual year was far from finished.

In December, Ronaldo was awarded the 2008 Ballon d’Or. At just 23, he became the third Portuguese player to win it, after Eusébio and Luís Figo, making this training shirt part of the international chapter of the season that turned Ronaldo into the world’s officially recognised best player.
